What is a Riding Lease Program?
Our Riding Lease Program offers the serious riding enthusiast many opportunties and advantages. Here's how it works. We have many horses to choose from. Start by having our riding instructor/trainer check your horse knowledge and riding skill. From your initial assessment, you will have the opportunity to choose from a number of horses in your ability range. As your riding ability improves, you will have the opportunity to work with other horses that will challenge your knowledge and riding skills in a positive way.
Where can I ride?
Lease horses remain at Black Forest Farm, however there are wooded trails on the property and safe roads to ride on. There are also opportunities to trailer horses off the property for a day trip.
We also have several enclosed riding options. Most people prefer the outdoor riding arena even in winter, however there is a building available to ride on on those bad days.
Who provides the tack?
We provide saddles, bridles, halters, lead ropes and brushes. We also have helmets, however we advise each lease participant to get their own helmet. If one continues in horses, a helmet does not cost much and is most effective with a proper fit. Just as you would have your own boots, jackets and other clothing, a helmet is a personal item of clothing. Lease riders may also want to purchase their own tack as time progresses. If eventually they get their own horse, this help spread out the costs associated with purchasing a horse.
What costs are covered?
A 12 month lease essentially is the same as board. This is the same as owning a horse except you don't have to pay for maintenance veterinary expenses such as vaccinations and worming or the farrier. Yes, there are going to be times you don't ride as much because of weather, but that's how it would be if you owned a horse.
You will be asked to sign a liability release. Even though
you are checked out and given permission to ride certain horses, that does
not guarantee you won't get hurt. Horses are what they are and one much
accept the liability associated with riding and being around horses.
While we take care of regular veterinary expenses, if a
horse becomes injured or sick as a result of the lessor's actions, they will
be responsible for expenses associated with getting the horse well and
sound.
When you use tack, you will check it out. Tack must be in the same condition
when it is returned. Damaged tack is the lessor's responsibility.
Cost
Cost depends on the term of your lease and can vary from $200-$500 per month. The term of your lease varies from 3-24 months. If you are not sure, try one month at a higher rate. If you upgrade to a longer term lease, you will receive credit for your advance payment. All lease programs are payable at least 30 days in advance. See contract for details. Receive a 10% discount for paying your lease in full at the time of signing.

If you are thinking of owning a horse, our riding lease program gives you a unique opportunity to try several horses and see if one of our horses is your special horse. Our unique way of selling horses offers many advantages for the horse, us as a seller and you as a buyer.
The majority of people who call looking to buy a horse are those who want a mature horse who is well trained. Such a horse requires many hours of training to be a reliable and trusted member of your family.
As a farm, we could not afford to raise a horse from birth, care for it for several years, plus put in the necessary training for what we would receive as a selling price. Most of our inquiries are from people who are less experienced with horses. As we raise horses, many of our horses would be young, green and probably not suitable as is for a novice horse person who has no other support available in raising and training their new horse.
Our Riding Lease Program offers a win-win-win approach for us, the horses, and prospective buyers. We have horses of various training and ability levels. You've already read about how the program works for a lessor. For us and the horses, the program supports young horses providing for their care and training over several years and with different people. We know they are safe and are in no hurry to sell them. If a person comes along who appears to be a match for that horse, the horse and the people involved can try it out for a minimal investment. If it then appears the horse is a match, it can be sold for a fair price. If it is not a match, the lessor did not have to pay a purchase price for a horse, had the use of several horses and does not have the responsibility of finding a good home for a horse. The horse can stay here indefinitely and continue to be a useful member of our family.
Ask about special financing, workstudy and training/riding lesson/boarding packages to help support your horse purchase and save you money.
Of course, cash works well too. All reasonable offers considered.
Horses can sell fast. Contact Black Forest Farm, LLC directly at 608-437-4905 for the current status and availability of horses or email us. Click on each horse's picture to learn more about him or her.
